Don't Miss The Mercer Museum New Wing Opening On June 18

Posted by Amanda Walsh

Looking for a local event for the entire family happening in the next few weeks? Then don't miss the Mercer Museum's new wing opening event on Saturday, June 18 in Doylestown, Pa. The new building will open to the public with a ribbon-cutting ceremony kicking off at 10:15 a.m. with guest emcee Lu Ann Cahn from NBC10, VIPs and local politicians. The first 100 visitors that day will receive a commemorative plaque and free admission to the new wing. Live music and activities are planned including a puppet show, craft demonstrations and a Henry Mercer character, so there will be something for the entire family to enjoy.

The new $12.5 million, 13,000-square-foot wing will house a state-of-the-art exhibition gallery and multi-flex Learning Center. A juxtaposition of contemporary green museum architecture against the traditional concrete façade and space, the new wing of the Mercer Museum also provides superior visitor amenities including ADA upgrades, improved parking facilities and visitor services.

The green building is the first of its kind in Doylestown. It includes many environmentally-friendly and energy-saving components – from its green roof, water-conserving bathroom fixtures and radiant heat concrete flooring slabs to the recycled-content wall panels in the new exhibit gallery.

The gallery’s inaugural exhibit, A World of Things: The Mercer Museum A-Z, offers a fresh look at the museum, its extensive, unique collections and its history. The first traveling exhibit, ToyTime, will open on December 17, 2011.
